758 People Wanted in Schengen Information System Detected by Romanian Police Officers

Police officers in Romania also said that they implemented a total of 16 European arrest warrants. They found 80 people flagged by the EU countries as having refused entry or stay in the Schengen Area, 221 people who were wanted in order to participate in a judicial procedure, and ten people who were reported as missing by authorities in Schengen Zone countries.
The report also revealed that 216 people wanted by Romanian authorities were identified by partners in other countries following the exchange of information through the SIRENE Bureau of the International Police Cooperation Center-General Inspectorate of the Romanian Police.
The Schengen Information System (SIS) is among the largest information databases, consisting of more than 40 million alerts related to people and alerts.
The system permits authorities to share and manage information when it comes to missing people, wanted people, as well as those who attempt to reach Schengen Zone countries in an unlawful way, among others.
The government of Romania approved a draft law on the country’s accession to the Schengen Information System on November 2, 2022.
According to authorities in Romania, the draw law also includes regulations aimed at increasing the SIS’ effectiveness, strengthening data protection and extending access rights.
Bucharest has intensified efforts to curb irregular entry attempts, which was among the main concerns of authorities in Austria that led the country to block the accession of Romania to the Schengen Zone on December 8 last year.
A decision on the matter is expected to be taken during the next meeting of the Justice and Home Affairs Council (JHC) scheduled for December 5 and 6.
