Austria’s President Opposes Government’s Schengen Blockade for Romania and Bulgaria
He said if the Schengen system does not work, why should Austria block Romania’s membership of these two countries, AtoZSerwisPlus.ro reports.
His comments came through a press conference held in Chisinau while expressing his hopes that the decision will be reviewed, according to a Radio Moldova report.
While Croatia’s accession to the EU’s borderless area of Schengen, on December 8, 2022, Austria vetoed the membership of Romania and Bulgaria over irregular migration concerns. The Netherlands opposed Bulgaria’s accession to the Schengen Zone under the same concerns.
The President of Austria’s position on this issue remains unchanged. On December 9 last year, confirming that Austria is in a difficult situation as a result of the increased number of irregular migrants, he said that the Schengen blockade does not contribute to a solution.
However, Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer said in October this year that Vienna maintains its veto when it comes to the membership of these two countries to the passport-free travel zone.
Emphasising that the decision has nothing to do with these two countries, Nehammer acknowledged both countries’ efforts to protect the external borders of the European Union.
Prime Minister of Romania, Marcel Ciolacu, considered the failure of Romania to join the Schengen Zone a profound injustice.
He emphasised that he will seek an extraordinary meeting of the Justice and Home Affairs Council on the matter in December.
Spanish Presidency of the Council of the EU targets a December vote to decide the accession of these two countries to Schengen.
The Minister of the Interior of Spain, Fernando Grande-Marlaska, last month stressed that the membership of these two countries to the Schengen Area is among the main priorities of Spain while expressing his hopes that the process would be finalised in December this year, during the next Justice and Home Affairs meeting.
