Bulgaria and Romania on Track for Schengen Zone Membership by Year’s End
According to him, the accession of both these Balkan countries to the borderless area of Schengen is among the priorities of the Spanish European Union Council Presidency, AtoZSerwisPlus.ro reports.
Sinkevicius reiterated the European Commission’s comments that since 2011, Bulgaria and Romania have met all the needed requirements in order for this process to be finalised.
He said that border controls between Romania and Bulgaria, on the one hand, and the Schengen Zone, on the other hand, cause unnecessary encumbrances, stressing that completing the two states’ accession to the EU’s visa-free travel zone is a matter of urgency.
European Commissioner for Environment, Oceans and Fisheries said that in the first few months of this year, migratory pressure along the Western Balkan route declined by 25 per cent.
Sinkevicius noted that the European Commission had intensified its work with the Spanish European Union Presidency in order to make a decision to admit these two states to the passport-free travel zone before the year’s end.
On July 12, the European Union’s Parliament adopted a new resolution, calling on the EU Council to take seriously the accession of both countries to the borderless area before the end of this year.
Through a statement, the parliament noted that the new resolution, which among others, noted that the two Balkan countries met all the needed requirements for this process to be finished, was backed by a total of 526 MEPs while the same was opposed by just 57 MEPs.
The same source said that keeping both countries outside the Schengen Zone causes both countries social and economic damage.
“Citizens of Bulgaria and Romania are discriminated against, as they face delays, bureaucratic difficulties and additional costs when travelling or doing business abroad, compared to their counterparts in the Schengen area,” the resolution noted.
Recently, the Spanish ambassador in Romania, Jose Antonio Hernandez Perez-Solorzano, said that Bulgaria and Romania’s accession to Schengen might be discussed during the Justice and Home Affairs (JHA) meeting that is set to be held in October this year.
Bulgaria and Romania’s accession to Schengen Zone was opposed by Austria and the Netherlands in December last year over unlawful migration concerns.
