Bulgaria and Romania’s Schengen Accession May Be Discussed During Justice Home Affairs Meeting in October
His comments came during a press conference while he stressed that the EU’s Schengen Zone must function respecting its original spirit without keeping internal controls in place, AtoZSerwisPlus.ro reports.
Earlier this year, the European Commission threatened authorities in Austria with legal action regarding the border controls while it also launched a formal consultation procedure with all EU states involved.
The ambassador said that the matter is likely to be part of the agenda for the JHA Council meeting in October, however, he stressed that October is not a deadline.
“The dialogue needs to be intensified to reach a consensus by this date,” he noted.
European Union Interior Ministers in December last year supported Croatia’s accession to the passport-free zone but didn’t permit Bulgaria and Romania to become the newest members of this area. The Netherlands and Austria voted against these two countries’ accession to Schengen, citing unlawful migration concerns.
However, a recent report of Euractiv noted that both these Balkan states may soon be members of the Schengen Area after they will be admitted to this zone in two phases from October this year.
The same source noted that in October, border checks at the airports will be abolished, while from January next year, ground controls will also be terminated.
Last month, the Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) urged the Council of the European Union to approve Bulgaria and Romania’s accession to the Schengen Zone by the end of this year.
Authorities in Spain have continuously expressed their support for the membership of these two states in the EU’s borderless area.
In April this year, the Minister of Interior of Spain, Fernando Grande-Marlaska conveyed to his counterparts from Bulgaria, Ivan Demerdzhiev, and Romania, Lucian Nicolae Bode, Madrid’s support for both states’ accession to Schengen Zone during the Spanish Presidency of the EU.
“We will work as hard as possible to unlock this issue, and I am confident that the formal meeting of the Council of Interior Ministers scheduled for next September will be the moment to finally achieve results,” Grande-Marlaska pointed out.
The Minister stressed the need to lift internal border checks, stressing that such a decision should have been taken long ago.
