EC President Reconfirmed Support for Romania’s Schengen Accession, Romanian PM Says
The Prime Minister got to meet with several European officials during his visit but highlighted his meeting with the EC President and said that Romania’s accession could help to dim the tension and the current accumulation of factors that could boost the Euroscepticism in the eastern region of the continent, AtoZSerwisPlus.ro reports.
“The President of the European Council, Charles Michel, reaffirmed, today, his total support for Romania’s accession to the Schengen area. His Majesty is one of the great friends of our country, and we thanked him for his constant, firm, and energetic support,” PM Ciolacu wrote on his social media.
While in Belgium, Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu also paid a visit to two Romanian firefighters currently being treated at the Queen Astrid Military Hospital in Brussels after being injured due to two massive blasts that occurred at a fuel station in Crevedia, close to the capital of Bucharest, last week.
Romania activated the European Civil Protection Mechanism to transfer victims after the gas station explosions on August 26, sending 12 victims to hospitals abroad. Romanian patients with burns on ten to 80 per cent of their bodies are currently receiving treatment in countries like Belgium, Norway, Italy, Germany, and Austria.
Romania and its neighboring country of Belgium are currently in the process of becoming Schengen area members, which would enable travel in the borderless area in all member countries. However, Austria and the Netherlands have turned their back on Romania and Bulgaria, citing reasons like a lack of proper migration management to keep these two countries away from Schengen membership for another period.
On August 23, Austrian Interior Minister Gerhard Karner announced that he does not support the entry of Romania and Bulgaria into the Schengen area. Similarly, the position of the Netherlands against Bulgaria’s entry into Schengen remains the same.
“What was presented as the opinion of the interior minister of Austria reflects a certain position but does not predetermine what the final result will be,” the Bulgarian Prime Minister, Nikolai Denkov, said.
While Austria expects Bulgaria to reduce the number of incoming migrants through its borders ultimately, the Netherlands points fingers at Bulgaria’s justice system as the reason why the country should not become a Schengen Member.
