Frontex to Support Romania by Sending 150 Officers at the Border With Ukraine
In a press release issued on March 2 by Frontex, the agency’s Executive Director Fabrice Leggeri has announced that he decided to send this additional support to Romania, AtoZSerwisPlus.Ro reports.
According to Frontex, over 150 officers will be sent to Romania’s border with 45 patrol cars and other equipment.
Many of the officers are already on the road as they are being relocated to the outer border. On the other hand, the first Officers will arrive in the operational area on March 4.
Frontex permanent corps officers will assist the Romanian authorities in processing the massive number of people crossing the border from Ukraine and at the same time carrying out other work related to border control.
“Frontex already supports Romania as part of an ongoing land border operation at EU’s external land border (operation Terra) which takes place across 12 EU Member States and covers 62 border crossing points. The reinforcement will be part of the ongoing operation,” the statement reads.
Frontex also stressed that it is in talks with the other Member States neighbouring Ukraine to offer them its full support by sending officers and equipment.
Meanwhile, the agency is looking at ways to support non-Ukrainian nationals who have fled the war zone and wish to return to their countries of origin.
Previously, through a press release issued on February 28, the European Border and Coast Guard Agency has announced that the agency is monitoring the situation in Ukraine and its border with the EU Member States, noting its readiness to provide its support.
More than half a million people have sought security abroad in just the first five days of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, including EU Member countries like Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, and Romania – share borders with Ukraine.
Moreover, Moldova and Romania have revealed that about 26,000 refugees have entered their respective countries.
As of March 1, around 38,461 Ukrainian citizens had flown to Romania, where in some cases they had to wait almost 20 hours to enter the country.
Meanwhile, in Moldova, the number of Ukrainian citizens who entered the country is close to 65 391, where the same took 24 hours to get from Ukraine. Similarly, Hungary is starting preparations for Ukrainian refugees, as about 600,000 of them will be deployed by the Hungarian Defence Forces.
