Romanian President Signs Bill Providing Tax Benefits for Digital Nomads
Digital nomads in Romania that want to benefit from the tax exemption law, have to be present in the country for a total of 183 days, which can be separated into more than one period within 12 consecutive months, AtoZSerwisPlus.ro reports.
The measure follows the announcement of visas for digital nomads in Romania, while the Parliament passed the bill for the digital nomad visa programme in 2021.
Romania Digital Nomad Visa is a programme that enables internationals to stay and work in the country. Some of the requirements that apply to digital nomads to obtain such visas include providing they have been employed full or part-time for at least three years prior to application. In addition, present a valid proof of income for a six-month period that has to be nearly €3,700 or $4,170 per month – three times the Romanian average gross salary of 6,095.
In addition, applicants have to submit identification documents, employment contacts as well as company information. Applicants are also required to explain the nature of their stay in the country.
Romania launched its digital nomad visa at the beginning of the year and is expected to attract international workers which will also help Romania’s economy.
“This legal initiative was developed following months of work in collaboration with the Ministry of Research, Innovation, and Digitalization, as well as experts working with the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. I initiated the project as I trusted it to be a law through which financial resources can be drawn to Romania, as many other member states have already done,” the Member of the Chamber of Deputies, Diana Buzoianu, pointed out.
The neighbouring country of Romania, Hungary, has also introduced the Digital Nomad Visa scheme, and the applicant should meet similar criteria; hold a valid employment contract, have a share in a company with profit outside the country and not pursue activities that can earn internationals money while staying in Hungary. Meeting such criteria makes an applicant eligible to obtain a White Card.
At present, countries with the most popular digital nomad visas are the Czech Republic, France, Greece, Germany, Iceland, Spain, Estonia, Malta and Croatia, while Portugal, although having a successful outcome from a digital nomad visa, might be soon dealing with a loss in digital nomads. One of the main reasons for this potential loss can be the country’s ending of its golden visa scheme, which can cause uncertainty among digital nomads.
